Benjy says...

Welcome to another Rock of Ages newsletter,

There are clearly a lot of Golden Earring fans out there, thanks for all the emails and calls on Thursday night raving about your favourite tracks .... There was a lot more to the Earring than just "Radar Love" and some of the earlier albums like "Together" and "Eight miles high" are worth checking out .... The special for Thursday February 2nd will the darlings of the prog rock set ... YES. Rock of Ages will be concentrating on the band's classic early to mid 70's period with the definitive lineup of Anderson, Squire, Howe, Wakeman and Bruford so you will hear gems like "Roundabout", "I've seen all good people", "Close to the edge", etc.

NB Please note that due to a Radio 2000 live broadcast of the SA vs Tunisia soccer match starting at 8pm there will be no Rock of Ages this coming Thursday January 26. Whilst this is indeed a bummer of note and beyond the control of ROA, you can be sure of your weekly dose of full colour rock 'n roll again on Thursday February 2.

News from the world of rock

I have been asked a number of times where I get my rock news/birthday dates, etc from: I have several sources that I gather info from including what is in my opinion the two most informative monthly rock magazines; Classic Rock and Mojo - both often have free CD's and are highly recommended. Another source is from the 'Net, particularly About Classic Rock (www.classicrock.about.com).This site is run by Dave White and is packed with great rock info, news and stories, not to be missed!

Piet Botha

Saturday 25th February 2006 the South African music industry pays tribute to one of it's great legends, Piet Botha, at a festival to be held at the Foundry Fly Lounge, cnr. of Hans Stydom Avenue and N4 (Witbank) freeway, Silver Lakes, Pretoria East.

The event, which is appropriately named "A Good Friend of Mine", a title of one of his favourite songs, starts at 13h00 in the afternoon and will feature top acts like Karen Zoid, Albert Frost, Anton Goosen, Gert Vlok Nel, Southern Gypsey Queen, Not My Dog, Scicoustic, Akkedis and many more of SA's best acts currently playing on the local music circuit. All the artists participating in this festival, have at some or other stage been involved with Botha, either by playing with him, having shared the stage with him, had an album produced by him or have been mentored by the master.

Rock of Ages's recommendations

Tokyo Dragons - Give Me The Fear

Tokyo Dragons

It is pretty quiet out there on the new releases front, most of the labels are only now getting back to business (nice job!) However I'm stoked that I have managed to get my hands on the debut album by UK classic rock hopefuls Tokyo Dragons. There has been a buzz on this band for a couple of years now, due mainly to their apparently high voltage live shows. However due to an undisclosed 'development hell' scenario the album, "Give me the fear", had been delayed for some months. The first inkling I had that here was a new ass kickin', full throttle rock 'n roll band was the track "Rocking the stew", featured on Classic Rock's "Best of 2005" sampler. The album is crammed full to the maximum with raunchy riffs, anthemic vocals, killer guitar solos reminiscent of great bands like Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Judas Priest and the like. Check out "What the hell" and "Do ya wanna" for starters.

Then Now

Benjy Mudie was inducted into the South African Rock Hall Of Fame on 14th August 2002. Of Scottish origin, Mudie started out in the music industry working in record shops. He later became the A&R man for WEA records, signing such luminaries as Lesley Rae Dowling, Baxtop and Falling Mirror. He has ventured briefly into the realms of songwriting, getting co-writing credit for Little Sister's song 'You Got My Heart', but it is mainly for his running of record labels, notably Tusk and more recently Fresh and Retro Fresh that he is honoured. With these labels he has tirelessly dedicated himself to putting South African music out there, showing an unshaking belief in the quality of SA music.
